Cuki and Loki — the way their souls found a way to us is nothing short of the greatest love story. Loki chose us at an adoption drive that we happened to be at three years ago, and Cuki found me on the last day of work at my previous office. An unexpected meeting that brought me and my family closer to God in so many ways. They’re animals in flesh, but when we see them, play with them, understand and love them, we realise they’re our children.

Our parents are very protective of them. They never let anyone disrespect them. They spoil them the way grandparents would spoil their grandchildren. Mom lets them lick the payasam vessels clean. I give Cuki a nice cool drink of water in the same tumbler we drink from. Dad brings ice cream for them. We just can’t imagine our dogs as separate beings from us. When we see them, we see an extension of the same soul that holds us all together.

Loki is growing up to be an alpha male — no Kabir Singh or Arjun Reddy could ever stand a chance to compete with him! He’s cuddly, sweet and extremely patient during the day. But at night, he’s a terror to be reckoned with — alert, protective and territorial. Cuki is his wife, and he’s very possessive and protective of her. Since he doesn’t like being groomed, he sometimes doesn’t allow us to groom her either!
We haven’t trained them formally, but they understand us better than most people who see and talk to us every day. Just the slightest change in energy, and they know something’s off. At the faintest sound of pain, they rush to see if everyone’s okay. Cuki cannot sleep without gluing herself to me or my husband. She can’t sleep without a blanket; Loki cannot sleep with one! They’re so individual, unique and precious.
It’s a blessing to be chosen by a species that doesn’t speak your language or understand your ways — yet connects with you so deeply. It’s a spiritual relationship no one can begin to fully understand.
In a world where everything is designed and altered to suit human needs, we choose to give them one safe space where they can simply be themselves. It doesn’t matter if we have to work around that — that’s what we do for our children, right? Give them all the love, and watch their souls blossom.
